The Projects

One of the most notable projects undertaken by Mongey Communications is the 2018 Papal visit, when Pope Francis visited Dublin, Ireland. The Challenge

For the Pope’s visit there were a number of challenges that Mongey Communications needed to overcome. With massive crowds expected to attend the event it was vital that the temporary surveillance installation was minimally disruptive and reliable. The two-day event also required networks to be set up across multiple sites. Communication was needed between a number of locations across the city of Dublin.

The Solution

To ensure the safety of both the Pope and the general public, it was vital to install a temporary network which could be trusted throughout the entirety of the two-day event. Coverage was needed in the final venue (Phoenix Park), as well as along the parks approaches, entrances and exits. It was also needed in search areas, and general surrounding areas of crowd movement and congregation. Public CCTV was in place. However, it was not sufficient for an event of this size or a VIP guest this important.

Full integration was also required at the 82,300 capacity Croke Park stadium, where a Papal address took place. Communications and CCTV feeds from all locations needed to be transmitted to local on-site control rooms at each location. Furthermore, they also needed transmitting to a central Command and Control room at Dublin Castle. It was key that high-speed fibre-optic connectivity was possible between the various remote sites. “With 300,000 people expected to attend we were briefed to provide the very best possible reliability and imaging performance from the additional cameras and network we employed,” explains Kevin McGrath of Mongey Communications.

The Technical Bit

Using SilverNet’s PRO Range, including the BASE, MICRO, LITE and MAX links, Mongey Communications were able to build a network consisting of point-to-multipoint and point-to-point links. Utilising the SilverNet Series 7 industrial switches, each camera was streamed back to the control room via the wireless network. There, all the cameras were then recorded and viewed in real time. SilverNet communication technologies worked closely with Mongey’s technical experts throughout.

It was simple to install and with the SilverNet network monitoring software SilverView, keeping watch over both the Pope and the large crowds of people was seamless. Close coordination with Mongey Communications ensured security measures were robust and reliable.
